HELLO ALL YOU BUZZERS OUT THERE! As you might have heard our blog is heating up and we are now offering book reviews on our blog! We are also interviewing folks we just can’t buzz in person due to time or distance conflicts. Just in time for LOVE/VALENTINES WEEK  is this:
Interview with Maura Kelly for her new book with Jack Murnighan,”MUCH ADO ABOUT LOVING” : What Our Favorite Novels Can Teach You About Date Expectations, Not So-Great Gatsbys, and Love in the Time of Internet Personals. The book, which has been featured in O Magazine and Elle, combines dating advice and literary lessons in a series of sharp, accessible, and funny personal essays—perfect for Valentine’s Day week or anytime.
USA Today says, “These writers and friends offer useful insights into finding love through classic novels… A treat for any book lover, happily mated or cheerfully single.”
The New York Daily News says, “With the rise of self-help books, we’ve forgotten that all literature is, in essence, “helpful” – what would be the point of reading if it didn’t leave you somewhat wiser for it? [That’s] the premise from which Kelly and Murnighan operate in this… enjoyable read… [It’s] probably the first time Virgil has been used for romantic advice, at least in this century – and that alone is an achievement.”
Publishers Weekly says Much Ado About Loving is, “a clever, amusing hybrid of lit crit and relationship advice.”
—————————————————————————————
Hi Maura-  Thanks for buzzing with us on our blog!
1- Do you believe in love at first sight?
MAURA: In his new book, “Thinking, Fast and Slow,” psychologist Daniel Kahneman talks abut how sometimes our bodies make big decisions for us, more or less immediately, and then our conscious brain goes along with them. Which is a long way of saying: Yes, this love at first sight thing can happen–in life and in books.
Love at first sight is exactly what the main character in Love in the Time of Cholera, Florentino, fell into, in fact. After merely glimpsing a young woman named Fermina through a window, he developed a love for her so strong that despite the fact that her father threatened him with bodily harm, despite the fact that they were kept apart for years (so that they could only communicate by letter), despite the fact that she eventually marries another man, Florentino’s love for Fermina never dies.
2- What are your feelings about cyber dating sites?
MAURA: I’m all for online dating sites. Dating is, among other things, a numbers game, and the Internet personals help to up your numbers. The last three significant relationships I’ve had have all been with people I met online–thank you, OkCupid, and Nerve.

3- Is too much emailing/texting with a prospective date a bad thing?
MAURA: Before you meet him or her? Absolutely. In Love in the Time of Cholera, during all those years when Florentino and Fermina are writing to each other, she has barely set eyes on him … and when she does finally get a good look at him, she’s appalled that she’s fallen so hard, and devoted so much time to this guy. In person, she feels not an iota of chemistry. The same thing often happens when you meet someone online. You’re so gaga for his pictures that you let yourself get into the habit of IMing or texting constantly for the week before you’re finally going to meet up … and then, face to face, you realize there’s a phermone mismatch or he has an odd laugh or whatever it is–something is not right. Save yourself the time and the hassle: Keep the emailing to a minimum of about five notes on either side.

4- How much importance should sex play in determining Mr/Ms. Right?
MAURA: It sure makes things easier when you’ve got a great sexual connection–although it can make things harder, too, in the sense that we sometimes stay with people who aren’t so great for us because the erotic pleasures of the relationship are so satisfying. … People should realize that if just about everything else is great–if you meet a person who treats you well and helps you feel happy–the sex is something you can work on. There’s nothing that improves it like trust and communication–and sex toys. Adult stores like Good Vibrations and Toys in Babeland not only have products that make sex lives more satisfying; they also have great customer service people who can talk you through whatever difficulties you and your partner might be having and suggest solutions.
5- Should you cross the political/religious aisle for love?
MAURA: I don’t know if you SHOULD, but it can be done, to great success–certainly if the main couple in HOWARDS END is any example. In that novel, a liberal bohemian discovers that a conservative capitalist is in love with her–and she is so charmed by his love (and has so much respect for how tough and capable he is) that she becomes determined to build a life with him. They end up very happy together.

Hello all you buzzers out there! I was truly excited to recently chat with this amazing lady!

Please meet- Kristy Kay – Soup to Nuts & Bolts:

Hi Kristy Kay, thanks for buzzing with us!

1. Saw your description was “All Things Home From Building to Baking”so rather like “Bob The Builder” meets Martha Stewart?

I love that, and yes, that’s a great way to put it. Growing up the daughter of a builder,
I learned how to “just do it yourself” well before anyone knew what “DIY” was.  Fast forward
to this amazing woman named Martha who redefined entertaining and cooking -
as a high school student, I was hosting dinner parties making elegant six course meals
out of her magazines and books (formal dress required of course!).
Combine that background with some formal education, event and interior
design experience, and it was only natural to combine all of these
passions and interests – and here I am today Kristy Kay – Soup to Nuts
and Bolts.

2. Speaking of THE Martha Stewart, did I hear you worked for/with her?

I did, the best way I could figure to really learn more from her was
to work for her and the amazing world she was building.  She owned a
high end registry company called “The Wedding List” with a location in
Boston. I managed the special order merchandising and spent my days
amidst the most amazing tabletop, silver and high end gifts.

3. I love the line in your bio which reads “If I was stranded on a
desert island, it would be a toss between bringing my drill or stand
mixer” lol! You have so many unique skills, what do you say when folks
ask you the question “What do you do?”

Goodness, that’s actually my least favorite question because I can’t
seem to answer it without making people look at me like I’m from
another planet!  But the truth is, I love making things.  Whether it’s
giving new life to a tag sale find, or trying my hand at the most
elaborate recipe I can find to make an amazing dessert.  It’s the
challenge.  I’m a busy wife and working mother and who isn’t looking
to make their world more beautiful and elegant? And, the pride of
doing that yourself is the best part.

4. Please tell our audience how you got started and who were your
biggest influencers?

I started out long ago as a child with arts and crafts. My earliest
memories are coloring beautiful sketches of a bowl of fruit I’d have
my father draw for me, over and over. He was an amazing artist that
only we knew about.  As time went on, I was always his helper in
various building projects or things around the house.  We also had a
large Greek family and my mother always had a houseful, whether formal
or casual, she was always hosting doing everything herself. So
influencers were my parents for sure.  I learned how to be creative,
whether it was through arts and crafts, cooking and entertaining or
building.  Then, later was definitely Martha Stewart – she enabled her
audience to create an elegance into all aspects of your life – food,
gifts, everything.  I knew I needed to find a way to bring all of this
together – building to baking!  After earning a BA in Communications
(interning at a TV station), I returned for Interior Design.  At that
time, women weren’t common in the building arena, but certainly in the
decorating space.  My first job after college was for Martha Stewart
and then I went on to work as an event planner in the wedding
industry. During all of this,  I was always entertaining and a
passionate home cook. I hosted endless gatherings, events and holidays
and was honored to be constantly asked to create special favors and
gifts for family and friends’ events too.

5. You are such a beautiful and inspiring lady, are people surprised
to see you holding a drill – building, and did you get any flack for
being a woman in that field?

Yes, I definitely get confused looks – the funniest was when a
client’s husband came home to see me in his living room up on a ladder
with my drill installing shelving in my tool belt – and oh yes, I was
SEVEN months pregnant.  Working with tradesman on many of my
renovation projects was at times a challenge but one that I actually
enjoyed.  It always turned a few heads when I’d show up onsite and
start the demo process myself.  On the job site and working amidst
various tradespeople, often times the immediate perception was one
of the typical “she’s a woman, what can she possibly know about
BUILDING?!?”  They’d quickly learn that I actually knew quite a bit,
but, I wanted their opinions and more importantly, wanted to work in a
collaborative way.  This helped immensely in earning respect as a
designer and in essence, their “co-worker”.

6. What are some of your goals in 2012 and beyond and where can
people find you? Any Kristy Kay words of wisdom or inspiration you’d
like to leave our buzzers with?

My goals for 2012 and beyond are definitely to show others the “here’s
how” for your home, your life, your world! Whether it’s a building or
renovation project, or putting on an impressive dinner party.  Maybe
it’s just having the confidence to install those curtain rods that are
still sitting in their box.  You can do it yourself and I’m going to
show you how. We live in a world of massive home improvement stores,
amazing design centers, craft stores etc – but what do you really do
with all of that?  or think of this way, what CAN you do with all of
that?!?!

I’d love for everyone to have that little bit of confidence where
they’re not afraid to try that paint color, pick up a power tool, test
that fancy French recipe – you can do it, and I’m there with you.
Let’s Make it simple. Make it elegant, Make it yourself!

Hi All You Buzzers!

Hope you are having a beautiful week end! Mary Jones author and radio host & lovely friend to Jaki’s Buzz will be blogging for us once a month. Here is her post below. Enjoy! If you haven’t yet caught her episode of Jaki’s Buzz, don’t miss it, catch it now at http://youtu.be/wNzJbK8WCzg!

Mary Jones’ Monthly Challenge!

I have been doing Challenges each month on my talk show for 6 years. They began as an alternative to resolutions, which I’ve never been a fan of. Honestly, I couldn’t even kid myself that I was going to commit to something for a full year. Not going to happen. But, I felt I could commit to something for one month, assuming it was something I was interested in, or truly wanted to work on in my life. One month…I could do that. My Monthly Challenges were born!

My Jan Challenge was a tough one…a 30-Day Rejuvenation Make-Over. We focused on something different each day. So, for February, I wanted to make it easier. So, I decided it would be…Have Some Fun!! No need to focus on improving any facet of your life this month! Once a week for the month, plan and do something that is totally FUN! Something you haven’t done in a long time but thoroughly enjoyed last time you did….or, something you haven’t ever done but have always wanted to. Each week, think outside your normal activity and routine and incorporate at least one enjoyable, silly activity. Part of this challenge is to force yourself to think about what you find to be fun, what you truly enjoy. (It’s a gift we all should give ourselves regularly…this is the time to start!) Have Some Fun!!

Mary Jones is Host of The Mary Jones Show and co-host of Leatherneck & Lace, heard daily on WDRC-AM and it’s 4 CT affiliates. She is the Co-Editor of Women & Friendship in the Thin Thread book series, Co-Author of Incredible Life, and contributing writer of The Power of Persistence.

Unable to deny his trained instincts, he’s is face with risking his life and that of his brother to save the very government that betrayed them both.
A story of all to realistic possibilities, Hard Target challenges us to pull back the political curtain and view the flesh and blood cost of national security. Howard Gordon provides a crisp and fast paced narrative delving the reader into the suspenseful rollercoaster ride of conspiracy.

Hello all you buzzers out there!

Hope you are having a beautiful week filled with laughter and sun shine buzzing smiles:) Here is a new blog from our brand new guest blogger Carlos Rivera! Let’s give him a BUZZZZZZZZING WELCOME.

“There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.”
