Hello all you Buzzers, HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! Jaki’s Buzz recently caught up with Grammy nominated musician Jim Brickman, to talk about his love of music and his upcoming performance at the Regina Quick Center for the Arts in Fairfield on May 13th.

Hello Mr Brickman,
Thanks for joining us on our Buzzing blog at Jaki’s Buzz. We are honored to have an amazingly talented musician such as yourself join us. Some of your best-known songs include the chart-topper “Valentine” as well as” “The Gift,” “Love of My Life,” “Simple Things” and “Peace.” Besides your great talent why do you feel your music resonates with so many & evokes such emotion?
As I write music, I think about where people will be listening to it, and how it will make them feel. Because the majority of my songs have no words, people can listen, apply it into their own lives, and take away what they need to hear.
Many of your songs are voiced by other musical artists. How do you choose the artists that you collaborate with?
I love writing with different people because each one draws something new out of me. As I write I hear a specific sound singing the vocals. I love using new voices that may not be familiar to listeners because they come to me with an eagerness and fresh energy. Of course, many have gone on to become household names like Martina McBride and Lady Antebellum.
I love that you have been a strong supporter of PBS, starring in four TV concert specials as we greatly admire PBS’s work. You are very progressive with video and have some great web media footage entitled “A Day in the Life, Brickman Tour”which touches and influences so many in positive ways. What drew you to doing these types of video’s for your fans?
When I talk to my fans at the after concert meet ‘n greets, they always want to know what goes on behind the scenes. Rather than tell them the same old stories, I decided to record some videos of our daily routine. They get a real feel for touring, and an appreciation for how much we love being on the road to bring them the music.

We understand you’ve been studying music since you were 5 years old. When did you realize that music was what you wanted to do when you “grew up”? I loved playing piano since I was 4 years old. It has always been a way of expressing myself. So, when it became a question of what to do with my life, playing piano was my obvious choice. My mom was very supportive, but encouraged me to get a degree that would complement my music career – business. I love sharing my music, and I’m happy it is appreciated on so many levels.

What guidance can you give to other aspiring artists ?
Listen to many different artists that you enjoy and admire. Hear what it is in their music and lyrics that speak to you. Then when you sit down to write or perform… adopt what you like from other elements and make it your own. So many pianists tell me “Everyone says I sound like Jim Brickman. How do I start my career?” Well, there’s already a Jim Brickman, so I tell them the best way is to create a new, unique sound. Find places to be heard. And don’t be afraid of rejection. Find places to play and show off your talent. Start small and get your style and personality known so that you can grow your career.
Six Gold and Platinum albums, 30 charted adult radio hits, two Grammy nominations, debuts at Carnegie Hall and the White House and the list goes on. Do you ever sit back now, look at your success and think WOW, I’ve made my dreams a reality, or are you too busy striving for more?
I’m always working on something new! My success has given me many opportunities to expand into other creative fields. I produced a Carpenters tribute show called Yesterday Once More that is currently touring the US. I hope to do more shows like that.
Congratulations on the scholarship in your honor at The Cleveland Institute of Music where you studied, this must be such an amazing feeling for you!! How did this come about? I had a lot of piano teachers growing up, and they all wanted me to play in what I call “their style”. It wasn’t until I studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, that I found a teacher who helped me develop my own style. It evolved out of my classical training and my love of pop music. I felt it was important to give something back to CIM, and encourage other young musicians.
We understand that you are going on tour and will be in our neck of the woods- Fairfield, CT on 5/13/2012. We hope to connect with you in person for a Jaki’s Buzz interview on our show and hear all about your tour if time permits you to buzz with us!
Best of luck Jim on your tour!

Hello all you Buzzers. I was fortunate to speak with actress and activist, Rosie Perez, recently at the YWCA’s annual “In the Company of Women” luncheon in Hartford. Truly inspiring.

As an actress who’s performed on Broadway, television and in film, which venue do you enjoy the most and why? I really hate this question because it’s not fair to ask an artist to choose or place more importance over one thing or another. That said if you must ask, my first instinct would be to say Broadway. It’s acting in its truest form-you are in the moment in front of a live audience, making a false reality as real as possible; very challenging stuff. However, I do enjoy film and television as well, and do not place a less importance on them. They are just different forms of storytelling.

Are there any roles you’ve done that really stand out for you in your career for one reason or another? I really like “Fearless” and “The Take”. Those two movies allowed me to play and develop characters that I normally do not have the opportunity to work with. Working with Jeff Bridges in “Fearless” and with John Leguizamo in “The Take”, was really cool because they both are so giving and did not have any type of preconceived notions about me or my abilities. That produces a free environment to explore many possibilities and most important, it produces a fun atmosphere.

You’ve had nominations for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, as a kid growing up; did you ever think you’d have that happen to you? It was not a question of wondering if it would happen or not. Acting was not my aspiration as a kid. I loved the arts and would fantasize about them and enjoy them constantly, especially movies and theater, but I always thought that I would be a scientist or perhaps an influential politician that would shake things up. When Spike Lee “discovered” me, my path changed its course. That said the possibilities were wide open. I never consciously thought about receiving a nomination, but I also I never limited myself in thinking, ‘Oh, that or this thing could never happen to me’. I was just enjoying the ride and its challenges. I think if you appreciate what life is bringing you and enjoy the process, you are in the moment as best as you can be, and disappointments are few and expectations are organic that do not carry certain burdens that can and may weigh you down with worry. So, when it did happen, I was so happy and filled with great joy.

We understand that you are the Head of the Artistic Board at the Urban Arts Partnership. Tell us how you got involved with them and why that work is so important. Urban Arts Partnership is an arts-integrated education curriculum that services over 12,000 undeserved kids. We work directly with and inside over 60 public schools in New York City and outer boroughs and are currently developing our program in Los Angeles. I am one of the co-founders of Urban Arts Partnership and have been part of the art-ed curricula for the past nineteen years (it began twenty years ago), and the board later appointed me to be their Artistic Director. I love my position at UAP. Sometimes it’s very hard work; trying to secure financing (which is not my primary responsibility, thank goodness), dealing with the public school system and its politics, coming up with new and innovative ideas that push the teaching and learning process ahead, etc. However, the rewards are enormous! It makes you feel so good to give, to just give and give and seeing it through. Respecting young people’s intelligence capacity, especially low-income kids who are regularly underestimated solely based on either their ethnicity or income status, is a great joy to me. When you respect that child’s ability, you can put any challenge in front of them and they will respond in the same way a “privileged” child would, or could. Offering another way to learn the academics necessary to graduate in a way that would lead to a college career or some type of viable career, specifically through the arts, is not only exciting to me but is productive and produces results. We, as a nation, must try and accept new teaching methods to reach “all” of our kids, regardless of race, creed or financial standing, because the current system is not working.

Lastly what is the next step in the Rosie Perez journey? What are you working on or hope to soon be working on? I don’t know where this wonderful journey may take me next, but I do know that I am as ready as I can be for whatever it brings me. I am currently promoting a movie I did last summer, “Won’t back down!” starring Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhall, that will be out this September, and a special guest starring role on “Nurse Jackie” that will be airing mid April. I am also working on two other projects that will hopefully come out in the next year or two, and a book.
Thanks so much for your time and have a great day! Rosie Perez

“The Woman Who Wasn’t There”, is an inspiring story of hope and strength born of tragedy, of one woman’s ability to channel her pain into a positive force for the good of others, with one sticking point….. it was all a lie.
Angelo Guglielmo Jr, (filmmaker and friend), shares with us the journey of Tania Head from the “ultimate survivor” of the World Trade Center tragedy, to the ultimate deceiver of a nation. Recounting her campaign of good works performed at the emotional expense of already fragile souls, “The Woman Who Wasn’t There”, co written with Robin Fisher, will leave you grasping for understanding and wondering if the ends could ever justify the means. It asks the unspoken question, does our need to believe in the courage of others drive us to the point of deceiving even ourselves.

Intelligent, experienced, and strong, Georgian Lussier is as powerful an author as she is a wage earner. In “55+ Unite” she galvanizes
veteran women to recognize and embrace the very strengths that only experience can provide and open themselves to new possibilities
in the work force. Georgian expounds on how, in this uncertain economy when employers are faced with hard decisions to stay in business,
we need to cultivate the understanding that seasoned female workers are the better choice. Though intended as a “call to arms” for women
over 55 as the title suggests, “55+ Unite” is a must read for all professional women and can be found on Amazon.

Hello all you Buzzers out there! I was recently honored to chat with famous and funny

Comedian Paula Poundstone http://www.paulapoundstone.com/ Here is our conversation, enjoy:)

————————————————–

Hello Paula- We love your work and find you so funny! Speaking of funny what is the funniest movie or show you have ever seen
or just seen lately?

I enjoyed peels of laughter from BRIDESMAIDS. By the way, I watched it in the theater, which had a lot to do with the sheer entertainment it provided. There’s something about laughing
among a group of people that makes it all the more potent.

Your work on the one-hour HBO special, “”Cats, Cops, and > Stuff.”" made you the first woman to ever receive the Cable ACE for
best standup comedy special, you were also the first woman to perform at the White House Correspondents dinner.
You’ve worked with the best of the best including your friend Robin Williams, done many live stand up shows, TV shows, cds,
books, you name it – Paula has done it in the comedy world! What advice would you have for women comedians making their start today?

Although I am often asked about the fact of my comic woman-ness, I have no evidence that my gender in anyway influences my success or failure, and
I simply don’t like to picture the scientific experiments that would be required to prove that if has or hasn’t. Aspiring comics should do what’s in their heart,
and not let any buffoons like myself tell them what to do. I try to think of funny stuff and say it, but that’s not for everyone.

I see that your work continues as the National Spokesperson for (ALTAFF), The Association of Library Trustees Advocates Friends
& Foundations. How did this come about and why was this work so important to you?

Libraries are easy to support. They’ve got books in them. Who doesn’t like books. So often when someone supports a cause, and there are thousands of
really worthwhile ones, they are often said to have taken a “courageous stand.” It takes no courage to support libraries. I have yet to cross a picket line,
and if I did, the posters would be spelled wrong. Libraries have lots of roles in our communities. My children and I discovered books on tape there.
They have lectures, clubs, dvds, periodicals, story time, book clubs, classes, and … books.

The world finds you funny but kids can be the toughest audience, do your kids enjoy your humor too?

My kids are particular fans of my physical humor, which I am mostly too shy to regale other audiences with. In our kitchen
I dance, rap, and interpret music with hand gestures. I must be fairly popular. I’ve been held over for another year. The first sentence of
the last paragraph of the summary letter written, in lieu of a report card, by my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Bump, in May of 1965 says,
“I have enjoyed Paula’s humorous comments about our activities.”

Lastly you are from the east coast. You will be coming back to the area soon on tour and will in fact be in Ridgefield, CT on MAR 23rd at
The Ridgefield Playhouse. Please tell us a little about what fans can expect from this show?

I love returning to New England. It is the best and most beautiful part of the country. I always look forward to telling my little jokes there. I talk about raising
a house full of kids and animals. I talk about trying to keep up on the news and world events well enough to cast a halfway decent vote. I talk about education,
snack foods, and Abraham Lincoln, but only where appropriate. My favorite part of the night is talking to the audience. I do the time honored,
“Where are you from and what do you do for a living,” and in this way, little biographies emerge which kind of give me the coordinates and wind direction
to which I set my sails. Connecticut always has great audience members. And, no, I don’t say that about everywhere I go.

Thanks so much for joining us Paula and be sure to check out Paula’s show at The Ridgefield Playhouse!
For more info on this and Paula’s other shows check out: http://www.paulapoundstone.com/

Hello all you BUZZERS out there!

Been having a wonderfully crazy growing period with Jaki’s Buzz and recently buzzed with Ned Farrell about his kickstarter campaign and Happy Bee business.

Be sure to check out and support his kickstarter campaign ASAP BEFORE THE DEADLINE! Thx all you buzzers for all your wonderful support and loyalty with
Jaki’s Buzz:) Here is Ned’s Kickstarter campaign: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/409022054/the-bee-happy-co?ref=email

Here’s what Ned had to say:

How did you get into the bee business?

During my senior year of college in the late ’80′s, I applied to the Peace Corps. The experience of living in another culture and helping people was always a dream of mine.
They asked me if I would be interested in teaching beekeeping as my primary focus. Keeping bees and making honey and beeswax is extremely important in the third world, first for the health benefits, and second as a source of income for the families who keep bees. That sounded exciting to me, so I started working with a beekeeper in CT to get experience, then learned proper beekeeping management skills with the African bees in Paraguay, South America. For the 2-1/2 years I lived there, I ended up helping many farmers set up bee yards on their own land. Ever since returning to the U.S., I have been keeping bees of my own, making honey and other hive products. Now I want to expand the business and teach people here how to do this.

What Would achieving this kickstarter campaign truly mean for you?

Achieving the kickstarter campaign would mean that I can return to my passion of keeping honeybees and teaching other people how do this for themselves. It’s like continuing the Peace Corps work in the U.S. My wife Sharyn and I will get enough equipment for 20 hives, along with educational tools and gear to go to schools, libraries, and even people’s homes to teach this. This first year we will also film the process from installing bees in the spring through harvesting honey in the fall, which will be available as a DVD. We also have children’s books in the works – storybooks and a coloring book – and music, too!

We call our company Bee Happy, because that is the sentiment we really want to spread.

Jaki’s Buzz agrees with that sentiment as we also are all about that. Have a great buzzing wkend!

HELLO ALL YOU BUZZERS OUT THERE! As you might have heard our blog is heating up and we are now offering book reviews on our blog! We are also interviewing folks we just can’t buzz in person due to time or distance conflicts. Just in time for LOVE/VALENTINES WEEK is this:

Interview with Maura Kelly for her new book with Jack Murnighan,”MUCH ADO ABOUT LOVING” : What Our Favorite Novels Can Teach You About Date Expectations, Not So-Great Gatsbys, and Love in the Time of Internet Personals. The book, which has been featured in O Magazine and Elle, combines dating advice and literary lessons in a series of sharp, accessible, and funny personal essays—perfect for Valentine’s Day week or anytime.

USA Today says, “These writers and friends offer useful insights into finding love through classic novels… A treat for any book lover, happily mated or cheerfully single.”

The New York Daily News says, “With the rise of self-help books, we’ve forgotten that all literature is, in essence, “helpful” – what would be the point of reading if it didn’t leave you somewhat wiser for it? [That’s] the premise from which Kelly and Murnighan operate in this… enjoyable read… [It’s] probably the first time Virgil has been used for romantic advice, at least in this century – and that alone is an achievement.”

Hi Maura- Thanks for buzzing with us on our blog!

1- Do you believe in love at first sight?

MAURA: In his new book, “Thinking, Fast and Slow,” psychologist Daniel Kahneman talks abut how sometimes our bodies make big decisions for us, more or less immediately, and then our conscious brain goes along with them. Which is a long way of saying: Yes, this love at first sight thing can happen–in life and in books.

Love at first sight is exactly what the main character in Love in the Time of Cholera, Florentino, fell into, in fact. After merely glimpsing a young woman named Fermina through a window, he developed a love for her so strong that despite the fact that her father threatened him with bodily harm, despite the fact that they were kept apart for years (so that they could only communicate by letter), despite the fact that she eventually marries another man, Florentino’s love for Fermina never dies.

2- What are your feelings about cyber dating sites?

MAURA: I’m all for online dating sites. Dating is, among other things, a numbers game, and the Internet personals help to up your numbers. The last three significant relationships I’ve had have all been with people I met online–thank you, OkCupid, and Nerve.

3- Is too much emailing/texting with a prospective date a bad thing?

MAURA: Before you meet him or her? Absolutely. In Love in the Time of Cholera, during all those years when Florentino and Fermina are writing to each other, she has barely set eyes on him … and when she does finally get a good look at him, she’s appalled that she’s fallen so hard, and devoted so much time to this guy. In person, she feels not an iota of chemistry. The same thing often happens when you meet someone online. You’re so gaga for his pictures that you let yourself get into the habit of IMing or texting constantly for the week before you’re finally going to meet up … and then, face to face, you realize there’s a phermone mismatch or he has an odd laugh or whatever it is–something is not right. Save yourself the time and the hassle: Keep the emailing to a minimum of about five notes on either side.

4- How much importance should sex play in determining Mr/Ms. Right?

MAURA: It sure makes things easier when you’ve got a great sexual connection–although it can make things harder, too, in the sense that we sometimes stay with people who aren’t so great for us because the erotic pleasures of the relationship are so satisfying. … People should realize that if just about everything else is great–if you meet a person who treats you well and helps you feel happy–the sex is something you can work on. There’s nothing that improves it like trust and communication–and sex toys. Adult stores like Good Vibrations and Toys in Babeland not only have products that make sex lives more satisfying; they also have great customer service people who can talk you through whatever difficulties you and your partner might be having and suggest solutions.

5- Should you cross the political/religious aisle for love?

MAURA: I don’t know if you SHOULD, but it can be done, to great success–certainly if the main couple in HOWARDS END is any example. In that novel, a liberal bohemian discovers that a conservative capitalist is in love with her–and she is so charmed by his love (and has so much respect for how tough and capable he is) that she becomes determined to build a life with him. They end up very happy together.
