It has been like a whirl-wind since I accepted the position as the Music Supervisor for the Jaki’s Buzz pilot. It has been something I have wanted to do for a while.
The chance is now and I am so excited for this opportunity. I have seen the script for the project go through a handful of re-writes and each time I read it I try to envision which song will go where.
I am excited to have a partner on this music supervisor journey in the form of artist Michelle Armstrong. I met Michelle through a mutual friend and even had her as a guest on the music podcast I host for Southern Gothic Productions.
Michelle and I struck up a friendship and I told her I had hopes of calling on her if ever I needed help with a project. Always someone willing to help and lend her music, Michelle informed me anytime.
That time came quicker than I thought, as just a few short months later I found myself connected with the Jaki’s Buzz project. I contacted Michelle and told her of my new role as the music supervisor and asked for her help.
With nervous energy, I forwarded the script to Michelle, who was both excited and intrigued by the project. There was one road-block that had me walking the floors in a state of nervous energy. See, Michelle had just signed with a new label and she had to check with them and her manager to make sure she could do the project.
I remember I got her email one weekend, and I felt this weight lift from me. I had it in my mind that I wanted Michelle, and her music, on board with me in this journey. And after skimming the email and reading that she was on board, I admit, I blew out a sigh of relief.
Now that the script is almost in filming form, I am charged with the task of penciling in my thoughts on musical choices. For the pilot of the web-series, all of the songs will be by Michelle.
Michelle and I have briefly discussed some options for certain scenes, and Michelle has added her suggestions. I am getting set now to spot some of the songs with the scenes and see if they fit.
The script calls for a scene where one of the actors is actually listening to one of Michelle’s songs on her iPod. This was a late addition to the script and I was so stoked to see it added in. Michelle is doing all of us a huge solid lending her advice and music to the project, and I am so excited that she is getting a great placement in the episode!
Michelle and I have some work to do in the coming weeks. I am confident she and I will find the perfect clips for each of the scenes, highlighting her talent and the smart and fun writing of the episode.

First of all, I am nothing short of elated and grateful to be on board with, “Jaki’s Buzz,” for their innovative and fresh web series! I love the combination of reality AND fiction in one show. In today’s media world, we see the separation of the two done well, but not yet the blend! I look forward to seeing the show in screen, after reading the creative script!
As Denise mentioned in her previous posting, we met through her Southern Gothic Productions (SoGoPro) Music podcast. We have agreed that we met at the perfect time- as this led to the opening of a new project so quickly after. Denise had all the makings of a music supervisor, with her versatile taste in good music and abilities technically behind the scene. I honestly knew it was a matter of time before she was working with her hands ON and IN music! . . .
So when she told me she was a music supervisor for a new show, I was so happy for her! Then she asked if I could jump on board, which I was honored to do! It was a matter of days before my label approved the project and I accepted!
Because I have joined in with a new team of representatives, Playing in Traffic Records, we are heavy in the developmental stage. This means new songs, new band, new recordings. I had just months before joining the label, created a compilation album with producer, Tim Kobza, in Los Angeles. Because of the new music in development, I had fewer opportunities for this previous album to be put to use and shared . . . BUT the tunes found themselves in the excited hands of Denise! So now they have a home.
After all, my intention in making music is to share it. And my songs oftentimes find a home and heart, MORE so, after they are created.
I also want to thank Jaki for so kindly welcoming me, (through our Internet relationship), in to this project! She is the star IN the show, but an obvious bright star of warmth outside of it.
I am thrilled to see Denise choose the right tunes for the project, and excited to watch, “Jaki’s Buzz,” come to life!
